6. The hypothesis should be stated in terms of the problem, with all variables clearly defined. For example: Because the researcher wishes to determine whether student scores improve over the previous average of 78, the test should be of the null hypothesis, HO:U=78. Against the alternative hypothesis, HA:Uᢆ where U is the true mean student score.

7. Specify the test used, why it was chosen, and how the test assumptions are met. For example: The standard deviation of the population is unknown and the sample shows no skewness or outliers, and so the one-sample t-test is appropriate. We check for and confirm that the data are said to come from simple random sample.

8. You need to know and show that you know the meaning of the P-value. You might consider concluding with statements such as “Under the assumption of the chance of observing our result or a more extreme result is….

10. Just because a sample is large does not imply that the distribution of the sample will be close to the normal distribution.
