Edward C. Hildreth, Jr.
Waynesville - Edward C. Hildreth Jr., 73, of Lodge Lane, Waynesville, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at his residence.
A native of the suburban North Shore of Chicago and 23-year resident of the Clearwater, Fla., area, he lived in Haywood County since 1987.
He was the son of the late Edward C. Hildreth and the late Margaret Owen Hildreth of Evanston, Ill., and the great-grandson of Philo Carpenter, the first druggist and an early settler of Chicago. Family heritage dates back to Revolutionary fighters and leaders of the community of Savoy, Mass.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Owen. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
He retired from Encyclopaedia Britannica Educational Corp., Chicago, in 1972, where he was director of editorial services. He was a graduate of Lake Forest Academy, Illinois, and the University of Alabama. He was a life member of Sigma Delta Chi, Professional Journalistic Society and the Art Institute of Chicago.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Beverly S. Hildreth of Hazel Crest, Ill., two nephews and one niece.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Josh Cole officiating. Burial will be in the family plot dating back to 1866 at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
