Obituary in Manistee Daily Advocate (Oct 21, 1904) "The body of William Balsam was brought home yesterday from Spragge, Ontario, where he died of peritonitis. His illness lasted less than a week. He is survived by a wife and two children who were at his bedside when he died, and also one brother.
William was born in Germany, June 16, 1861 and when his family moved to the United States nine years later, he and his brother settled in Manistee and lived here ever since.
Mr. Balsam was a band sawyer and it was while in the employ of the Cook Lumber Co. he was taken sick. He was a member of Modern Woodmen, K.O.T.M.M. and held insurance in them as well as Northwestern Mutual Benefit.
The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon and internment will be at Oak Grove."
