Her parents were Alferius Selvester Friedt ( born October 28, 1885. In Karlsruhe, So. Russia.) and Monica Schneider Friedt ( born October 4, 1889, near Center, N.D. on a homestead. ) There were 8 boys in this family and Mary was the youngest one of 7 girls. Mary lived at our house for a while until she could join Bob on base.

Mary F. Balsam, of Billings, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at St. Vincent Hospital. The youngest daughter in a family of 15 children, Mary was born Dec. 8, 1924, to Alferius and Monica Friedt in Billings.
She was raised and educated in Billings, graduating from high school in 1943. She attended Montana State and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.
She married Robert Balsam in Billings Feb. 24, 1949.
Mary taught all her children to golf, ski, play bridge and entertain. She had been the Ladies club champ at the Hiland's and was a bowling champion at Jubilee Lanes. She was an avid horse race fan, enjoyed sleigh rides and always lived life to the fullest. The family social director, she was the first to discover the newest fad and always wanted the best for her family. She had a love for young people and was always concerned for others.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; her son Rob, his wife Twyla and their children Andy (Darcy), Robbie and Rhianna, and great grandson Dylan; her daughter Connie Balsam, her husband Mick Mennie and their children, Sean, Rob, Josh and Sarah; and her daughter Janet Bramblett, her husband Tim and their children Becky and Timmy. She is also survived by three brothers and three sisters. Special thanks to Ruth Chapman and Katie Volnek for all their help.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary with interment in Mountview Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. 61
