bullet  General Notes:

"The device (Isolette) which makes such recoveries possible is the joint development of two Philadelphia friends -- Dr. Chalres Culloden Chapple, a pediatrician, and Samuel Young Gibbon, a former investment banker and World War intelligence officer -- who, at the time they joined forces after the war, were both undergoing frustrations in their respective careers.
Chapple, a stocky, bouncy, youthful-looking man, the father of three boys and a girl, was -- as he still is -- senior physician at Philadelphia's famed Children's Hospital and senior consultant in pediatrics to the United States Naval Hospital. During the war he had served in various capacities in the armed forces, notably as a medical gas officer, writing manuals on the treatment of poison-gas casualties. Before that he had been attached simultaneously to four hospitals in or near Philadelphia, and had taught pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvaina Medical School. He was further distinguished as the discoverer of a method for diagnosing and correcting congenital dislocation of the hip in infants, the first infant to whom he applied it having been his own daughter. He had also invented the Chapple incubator, and therein lay the source of the frustrations which were plaguing him when he ran into Gibbon." 61,137,138
